The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Lifeline program is the FCC’s permanent program aimed at helping low-income households stay connected to the Internet and bridge the digital divide. It offers discounts on Internet and phone services. According to the Universal Service Administration Company, 2022 data shows over 38 million households are eligible. Monthly discounts up to $9.25 are available to qualifying customers and $34.25 for eligible applicants who live on federally recognized tribal lands.
You may qualify for Lifeline if you participate in any of the following assistance programs or meet the specified income requirements: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA), Veterans Pension, Survivor Benefit Programs, specific tribal programs or your income is at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines.
Due to the low telephone and broadband subscribership levels and access rates, customers who live on tribal lands have enhanced Lifeline benefits. If you participate in any of the above or the following:
- Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Tribal TANF)
- Tribal Head Start
- Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
